On top of that we&#8217;ve moving over to being a sales-driven SaaS startup, not only focusing on product.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"4e1a\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--blockquote\">Last year when Quipu turned three years old, Roger wrote a post on working in a startup and how\u00a0every year feels like a dog year, an opinion he still holds:<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"025f\" class=\"graf graf--blockquote graf-after--p\"><p>Every year still feels like seven, but we\u2019re growing up to be a mature software company, and that means a new set of changes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4 id=\"e5f0\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--blockquote\">The radical team\u00a0change<\/h4>\n<p id=\"4760\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">Over the last four years Quipu has slowly but steadily been growing their team as their business grew year over year.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8fe5\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">A small development team of a few people where each team members did a little bit of everything, has grown to a full scale team, with several team members dedicated to the back-end, front-enders, a product designer and an architect.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2a83\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Co-founder and CTO\u00a0<a class=\"markup--user markup--p-user\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@abellonch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@abellonch\" data-anchor-type=\"2\" data-user-id=\"73a331c112f4\" data-action-value=\"73a331c112f4\" data-action=\"show-user-card\" data-action-type=\"hover\">Albert Bellonch<\/a>\u00a0puts it like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"7a2c\" class=\"graf graf--blockquote graf-after--p\"><p>We&#8217;ve gone from a startup that more than anything prioritized shipping product and going super-fast, to a more established tech company, where we can use more time and resources on dedicated parts of the product.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"8d52\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--blockquote\">Even though the seven person development team is growing to know each-other better,\u00a0<a class=\"markup--user markup--p-user\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@abellonch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@abellonch\" data-anchor-type=\"2\" data-user-id=\"73a331c112f4\" data-action-value=\"73a331c112f4\" data-action=\"show-user-card\" data-action-type=\"hover\">Albert<\/a>\u00a0is happy to be able to spend more time talking with each developer:<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"8317\" class=\"graf graf--blockquote graf-after--p\"><p>Before I was coding every day, but now I&#8217;ve got time to talk to each team-member, how they&#8217;re doing and how they develop themselves professionally. I think that&#8217;s super important the faster we grow.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"7066\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--blockquote\">CEO\u00a0<a class=\"markup--user markup--p-user\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@rogerdobano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@rogerdobano\" data-anchor-type=\"2\" data-user-id=\"3fc036a70bc7\" data-action-value=\"3fc036a70bc7\" data-action=\"show-user-card\" data-action-type=\"hover\">Roger<\/a>\u00a0believes there &#8216;s a clear reason why they&#8217;re so happy with the new team:<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"e947\" class=\"graf graf--blockquote graf-after--p\"><p>In the interviews we didn\u2019t only test their code, but more importantly, we tested their ability to think deeply about hard problems.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote id=\"e53a\" class=\"graf graf--pullquote graf-after--blockquote\"><p>The reason why we chose to do these tests is that we\u2019ve learned that you can be fast, but if you don\u2019t think properly about the challenges you face, you\u2019ll have many long-term problems.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"c02c\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--pullquote\">Also a new sales-team has been built from scratch, with their own sales manager in place to lead the new department.<\/p>\n<p id=\"605b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Until recently\u00a0<a class=\"markup--user markup--p-user\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@rogerdobano\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@rogerdobano\" data-anchor-type=\"2\" data-user-id=\"3fc036a70bc7\" data-action-value=\"3fc036a70bc7\" data-action=\"show-user-card\" data-action-type=\"hover\">Roger<\/a>\u00a0was the person leading the sales effort, but being in charge of both the sales and the company as a whole becomes challenging as the company grows:<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"a27b\" class=\"graf graf--blockquote graf-after--p\"><p>We always had a competitive advantage with our product, but our sales effort has been too slow too long, and we needed to change that.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"7d1e\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--blockquote\">The last months Quipu has built a four-member team of energetic sales people to bring their \u201cfriendly accounting\u201d software to the world (and they&#8217;re looking for more energetic people)<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"7b2b\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--p\">The issues of growing\u00a0up<\/h4>\n<p id=\"f055\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">The first years of a startup&#8217;s life it\u2019s easy to motivate people. The team is excited to be working on something new, something that\u2019s changing the status quo, just like Quipu&#8217;s doing in the B2B finance vertical.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0c54\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">But something changes when the team grows and the startup becomes more established, according to Roger:<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"2295\" class=\"graf graf--blockquote graf-after--p\"><p>The phase we\u2019re in right now is one of the most demanding periods for our company. And just as our company has grown the last years, so has our team, and the relation you have with them is not as \u201cfamiliar\u201d as it used to be. Keep building a strong company culture is as important as understanding that people have lives outside our little tech bubble. I think that\u2019s essential in continuing to grow what\u2019s one of Barcelona\u2019s best teams.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"434c\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--blockquote\">2017 has also been the year of international expansion and the first customers in France has now started using the Quipu product under the new name Zyfro.<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"3ddc\" class=\"graf graf--blockquote graf-after--p\"><p>Our new marketing and sales team consists of several French people, the first feedback from customers has been good, and we&#8217;re eager to see how the rest of the French market responds to the product.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"43ef\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--blockquote\">He adds:<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"068f\" class=\"graf graf--pullquote graf-after--p\"><p>That everyone can do business on the internet is the biggest lie I&#8217;ve heard. Even though the barriers are low, like any business in order to grow fast you need a notorious product, money and relevant\u00a0mission.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"58e3\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--pullquote graf--trailing\">Quipu has a goal of raising their series A-round sometime at the start of 2018.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly the whole Quipu team\u200a\u2014\u200aa great bunch of\u00a0people!
