The Ethics of Technology

ATTENTION: THIS TEMPLATE IS DEPRECATED

How does ethics relate to technology? What are the implications of working with personal data, and how should it be handled? Join us for an exciting conversation on the future of privacy and app design!

Our host Iris Huis in ‘t Veld is a researcher at Eticas Consulting, a startup that focuses on the ethical, legal and social impact of data-intensive technology. Their clients include the city of Barcelona, and large-scale EU-funded innovation projects.

Software developers have the amazing skills to create or shape behaviours and innovate beyond imagination. The realization that technology has also the potential to risk human rights and values became clear after Edward Snowden blew the whistle and exposed the magnitude of government surveillance. Data-driven business models and new and emerging technological trends like social media, the Internet of Things, wearables, automated decision-making, open data and personalization have shown the risks we‘re exposed to.

Iris will introduce you to the field of applied ethics and technology, guide you through some real-life examples of “best practices” and “worst practices”, and eventually provide you with some tools to improve your own “ethical thinking” and practices as a user and designer.
